Behind Saxon House
We met during our move to London in 2025, and have since travelled across Europe together with many evenings spent discussing our love for jewellery.
In building Saxon House, we wanted to ensure the collections emulate the qualities we look for ourselves in jewellery:
-
Unique style
-
Timelessly chic
-
High quality
These principles resulted in hours of research, to understand the terminology used in jewellery sales. We've loved this part of Saxon House's journey and wanted to share the bits we found intriguing.

What do gold carat measures mean?
Carat (ct) in gold measures its purity on a 24-part scale, where 24 carat is 100% pure gold, and lower numbers indicate a mixture with other metals (aka 'alloys') for added strength and durability. The higher the carat, the purer and softer the gold, while lower carats offer more durability for everyday jewelry. Pure gold is too soft to withstand daily wear, so jewelers mix it with metals like copper, silver, or zinc to increase its hardness, durability, and change its color (e.g., creating rose gold with copper or white gold with palladium).
How Gold Purity is Measured
-
24 Parts: The entire gold item is considered 24 parts.
-
Carat Number: This number shows how many of those 24 parts are pure gold.
Common Gold Carats | Descriptions |
|---|---|
9 Carat (9k) | 37.5% pure gold (9/24), durable and affordable. |
14 Carat (14k) | 58.3% pure gold (14/24), common for everyday wear. |
18 Carat (18k) | 75% pure gold (18/24), a popular choice for durable jewelry. |
22 Carat (22k) | About 91.67% pure gold, used in some coins and higher-end jewelry. |
